Mkomazi National Park lies in northeastern Tanzania along the Kenyan border and forms part of the greater Tsavo–Mkomazi ecosystem. Its dry savannah, acacia woodland and rugged landscapes create a very different safari experience from Tanzania’s greener northern parks.

The park is especially important for conservation. It is home to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary and supports African wild dogs, while visitors may also encounter species such as fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, lesser kudu and a wide variety of birds. The quieter atmosphere makes Mkomazi appealing to travelers looking for a more remote and less crowded wildlife experience.

Gombe Stream National Park is one of Tanzania’s most distinctive wildlife destinations, set along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. The park is internationally known for its wild chimpanzees and for the long-running research associated with Jane Goodall. TANAPA identifies chimp trekking as Gombe’s signature visitor activity.

Unlike Tanzania’s classic savannah parks, Gombe is explored largely on foot through steep forested terrain. Visitors can trek in search of chimpanzees, encounter other primates, enjoy forest birdlife and take in beautiful views across Lake Tanganyika.

Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wildlife destinations and one of the best places in Africa to experience an incredible concentration of animals in a relatively small area. Formed from an ancient volcanic caldera, the crater is surrounded by dramatic highlands and features open grasslands, forests, wetlands and freshwater springs that support wildlife throughout the year.

A game drive on the crater floor offers excellent opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and large numbers of gazelles. The area is also one of Tanzania’s notable places for spotting the endangered black rhino. With breathtaking scenery, diverse wildlife and easy access from the northern safari circuit, Ngorongoro is an essential part of many Tanzania safari itineraries.
